Sangoma Asterisk SS7/SMG FAQ
- What sort of machine configuration is recommended for 16 E1 Ports to be handled from single box?
- Can I split the E1s, that is, x E1s for Inbound process, y E1s for Outbound process, out of a total 16 E1s?
- What sort of installation support / future support is provided (since we are quite new to ss7box)?
- How do I start the SMG/SS7 Installation process?
- Is there a web interface to manage the ss7box software?
- Does it giveus any sort of API that allows us to program it further? For example,if we have to create customized IVR, what sort of codes will we get when call is placed on dialer, a call gets disconnected from remote end, a call doesn't pass through, etc., since we are writing some sort of automated dialer?

Q1. What sort of machine configuration is recommended for 16 E1 Ports to be handled from single box?
A1.
Single Box: 16 E1 Capacity
-> 1 x QUAD Core System (50% usage at full load - no transcoding )
-> System RAM: 2GB or more.
-> Single box will run Asterisk/SMG/SS7 and all TDM cards
-> No Transcoding G.711 SS7 to SIP
Dual Box Architecture: 16 E1 Capacity
-> 1x QUAD Core System (30% usage at full load - no transcoding)
-> 1x DUAL Core System (50% usage at full load - no transcoding )
-> System RAM: 2 GB
-> Box 1 will run Asterisk Only
-> Box 2 will run SMG/SS7 and all TDM Cards
Single Box Architecture: 8 E1 Capacity
-> 1x DUAL Core System (50% usage at full load - no transcoding )
-> System RAM: 2 GB
-> Single box will run Asterisk/SMG/SS7 and all TDM cards
These are the minimum requirements for 16 E1 or 8 E1 Ports without trans coding (G729 etc.)
If you are going to be trans coding then we suggest increasing number of CPUs by 2 times.
The above server capacity: 50% load.
Q2. Can I split the E1s, that is, x E1s for Inbound process, y E1s for Outbound process, out of a total 16 E1s?
A2. Sure, you can specify E1s into trunk groups. And using Asterisk you can make calls on those E1s that are part of a trunk group.
Q3. What sort of installation support / future support is provided (since we are quite new to ss7box)?
A3. With the Sangoma SMG/SS7 Solution you get full support from us. A Sangoma SMG/SS7 expert will configure your ss7 line, and get your Asterisk up and running. We will make outbound/inbound calls for you, and once everything is running you will be left to write Asterisk Dial Plan.
Q4. How do I start the SMG/SS7 Installation process?
A4. In order to start the process, you will have to give us SSH login to your server that contains your Sangoma AFT hardware.
We will also need your full SS7 Information that you should have received from your Telco, so that we can configure the ss7 line for you.
Please fill out the following ss7 questionaire and return it to us.
SS7 Questionaire
We will do an installation for you.
Q5. Is there a web interface to manage the ss7box software?
A5. ss7box works with Sangoma media gateway together with Asterisk. From your point of view ss7box/smg is just another channel of Asterisk. So all the management will be done via Asterisk.
Asterisk is used as a dial plan as well as the signal media gateway rom ss7 to sip/iax, or back to ss7.
Please check out http://wiki.sangoma.com/wanpipe-linux-asterisk-ss7 for more information and graphical representation.
Q6. Does it give us any sort of API that allows us to program it further? For example, if we have to create customized IVR, what sort of codes will we get when call is placed on dialer, a call gets disconnected from remote end, a call doesn't pass through, etc., since we are writing some sort of automated dialer?
A6. This is all part of Asterisk. And you would use Asterisk to create IVR.
